The 2023 Australia humpback whale season has come

The 2023 Australia humpback whale season has come to an end!

It was an incredible season, with record numbers of whales visiting Hervey Bay and many unforgettable moments. This year, PWF’s research team conducted data collection in Hervey Bay, Queensland and Eden, New South Wales in order to document the body condition of humpback whales at different stages of the migration. These data will add to our long-term monitoring of this population and contribute to the short-term study we are conducting to understand migration dynamics in a changing climate. The team recorded the body condition of 345 whales; 121 of whom were mother-calf pairs. The season was a huge success and fantastic team effort! We can’t wait to see what 2024 will bring.

Research activities conducted under research permits and following animal ethics approval. The drone operator holds a remote pilot (RePL) license certified by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

This week, PWF’s Hawai’i Researchers are kicking off fieldwork from Lāna’i! Today the team had a great start and encountered both false killer whales and spotted dolphins 🐬 🙌🏽

Over the next two weeks we will be conducting surveys of blackfish with our priority focus being on studying endangered false killer whales. Our team alongside @mmrp_uh hopes to deploy Customized Animal Tracking Solutions suction tags #, also known as CATS tags, to learn more about energetic dynamics and foraging strategies of false killer whales. Join us in wishing them good luck in their fieldwork to come!
